At the beginning of the period, the tradewinds over the Caribbean were strong. Offshore winds over the Gulfs of Papagayo and Panama were well established and the winds in the Gulf of Tehuantepec were weak. Northerly winds surged into southeastern Mexico and the western Gulf of Mexico on March 6 and the Tehuantepec jet increased abruptly and dramatically, extending more than 1000km into the Pacific.
On March 10, the Tehuantepec jet rapidly decreased, while the Papagayo and Panama jets continued to blow offshore and deep into the Pacific. For the next several days, the winds over the Gulfs of Papagayo and Panama continued to blow under the influence of the Caribbean tradewinds, but with decreased areal extent, evidently in association with a weakening of the Caribbean tradewinds.
