Burke Hales - Associate Professor
Education:

BS, University of Washington (Chemical Engineering), 1988
MS, University of Washington (Chemical Oceanography), 1992
PhD, University of Washington (Chemical Oceanography), 1995

Research Interests:

Mesoscale dynamics and distributions of nutrients and carbon in the surface ocean; rates of defradation and preservation of carbon in seafloor sediments; production of dimethyl sulfide in surface ocean.

Current Research:

Mesoscale distributions of nutrients and carbon during the initiation of the phytoplankton bloom in the Ross Sea polynya; species dependence of the photosynthetic nitrogen/phosphorus uptake ratio; interpretation of the calcite content and age of the seafloor sediment mixed layer; high-resolution measurement of surface-ocean dimethyl sulfide.
