  • The B.H. Ketchum Award of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, in recognition of research concerned with the large-scale dynamics of the coastal ocean, October 1986.
  • Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, elected 1999.
  • Minerals Management Service (MMS), Director's Commendation for support provided to MMS as a member of the Modeling Review Board, March 2004.
  • Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, elected 2005.
  • The Henry Stommel Research Award, for his insightful and rigorous elucidation of ocean processes over the continental shelf and slope, American Meteorological Society, January 2005.


Research Interests:

John S. Allen has been conducting research in physical oceanography since the early 1970s. Contributions have been made to the study of coastal shelf circulation processes through theoretical work, field experiments, data analysis and interpretation, and numerical modeling. Author or co-author of 92 scientific publications.
