COAS Alumni Survey

According to a recent survey, COAS alumni who responded appear to be well satisfied with their preparation for their current job. Of 117 responses, 84 describe as “strong” the effectiveness of COAS in preparing them for employment. 105 of the 117 responding said they get a sense of satisfaction from their work.

Thirty-one of respondents earned PhDs at COAS and 86 earned MS degrees; 108 are working full-time and 7 part-time; 2 are enrolled in school. (Respondents are listed by name, below.)

Of alumni respondents who received degrees in oceanic or atmospheric science, 27 are working for federal, state or local government; 18 have academic appointments in research; 17 work for “for-profit” establishments; 13 have academic appointments; 11 are in non-governmental organizations and 1 is in the military.

Of alumni respondents who received marine resource management degrees, 20 are working in planning and management, 12 in academic settings, 11 in fisheries management, 10 in marine pollution and water quality, 8 in GIS and remote sensing, 6 in both marine conservation and communication and marine education and 4 in coastal processes, management and hazards. (Some gave more than one response.)

When asked to choose what factors had significant influence on their career development, 96 indicated job experience, 63 graduate coursework and 59 professional peers.

The survey was conducted by the COAS Student Services Office.
