Ocean Literacy

Seven essential principles of ocean literacy, from the Ocean Literacy Campaign:

  • Earth has one big ocean with many features.
  • The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of Earth.
  • The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.
  • The ocean makes Earth habitable.
  • The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems.
  • The ocean and humans are inextricably linked.
  • The ocean is largely unexplored.

National Marine Sanctuaries promotes ocean awareness, including materials for teachers and students as well as photos, videos, research findings, maps and information about visiting marine sanctuaries.

Sea Grant Ocean Sciences Education Center offers an array of tools and links for teachers, including lesson plans and professional development.

Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures provides video clips from the PBS television series. For teachers, the site also provides activities and hands-on lessons and interactive games, with accompanying lesson plans.
