Message from COAS Dean Mark Abbott Earth System Science
The world has come to understand that the Earth itself is the foundation of economic sustainability and success.
Our country is beginning to see that understanding the natural world is vital to enhancing American innovation and competitiveness. To that end, the United States is expanding its investments in science and engineering, and Oregon looks to its universities to enhance its economy.
At the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS), we provide critical knowledge to answer environmental and economic problems facing the state—erosion of our shoreline, atmospheric pollution and impacts of climate change on marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
COAS and its partners at OSU coordinate an innovative approach to research and education in Earth System Science that promises large impacts to Oregon and the nation.
We explore science, policy and technology as they relate to the Earth system, bringing a global perspective to critical regional issues from both a scientific and policy perspective. In addition, we provide education to meet the expanding need for professionals in Earth System Science.
We educate researchers in academia and government, train managers in government and business, and provide new opportunities in education, communication, and policy. We also build on our base of traditional undergraduate and graduate programs to expand professional and certification programs.
Unique on the national scene, the Earth System Science initiative establishes COAS as a leader in meeting the challenges facing society and our planet.
