Teachers at Sea—Ocean Sciences and Math Collaborative Project
A Collaborative Effort Between:
-
College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University
-
Oregon Sea Grant and Hatfield Marine Science Center
-
Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development National Institute for Literacy
Building upon the expertise of partner organizations, this collaborative project integrates ocean sciences into the science, math and critical-thinking curriculum of Adult Education and into the professional development activities of the Oregon System of Adult Education and Workforce Development. The instructors represent diverse instructional programs such as workforce training, workplace education (cannery workers), adult basic education, adult secondary education (GED preparation), English to Speakers of Other Languages, Family Literacy and Tribal Education (Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians).
The Instructors:
-
Develop and adapt curriculum linking ocean sciences, math, technology, critical thinking and communication skills
-
Disseminate curriculum to all providers
-
Engage students in critical thinking, science and math learning activities that relate directly to real-life Oregon issues linking ocean sciences with employment, environmental, and economic concerns
-
Develop and maintain a website for disseminating ocean science curriculum and professional development materials
-
Match ocean scientists with local adult education classrooms through site visits
Instructors from this program are also invited to participate in oceanographic cruises led by COAS researchers. Teachers accompanying these expeditions assist the scientific team in its basic research, and develop instructional materials targeted at adult learners.
An instructor comment: “This has been the journey of a lifetime for two land-based teachers. We have learned much about the operation of a research vessel and scientific processes in oceanography. We’ve also learned what life at sea is like, and we have respect and admiration for those who work on the sea. We also have a much better understanding of global issues relating to the limits of our ocean resources.”
