COAS Chemical Oceanographers study the chemistry of the oceans and other aquatic environments to record changes in the environment over time.

They study interactions with plants, animals and microorganisms; the Earth’s seafloor and continents; and the atmosphere. They examine chemicals in oceans, lakes and rivers to understand natural and anthropogenic changes.

Research focuses on development of analytical methods and chemical sensors, chemical hydrography, biogeochemical cycles, hydrothermal system chemistry and biomarker studies.

Preserving global resources demands an understanding of global environmental change, Earth resources and natural hazards over time scales longer than recorded by human experience.

“The Arctic plays a critical role in controlling the transport of atmospheric gases into the deep oceans, and although we know the basic mechanisms, there is much we don’t know about the details of how the machinery works.”

--Robert Collier, Professor of Chemical Oceanography
