Atmospheric science is about climate variability and change. Climate and weather research provides information for regional agriculture, fisheries, forestry and economic development.
Understanding climate changes that impact the entire world requires knowledge of complex interactions between the atmosphere, ocean and land systems.
Research themes include: interactions of the atmosphere with the ocean and land surfaces; atmospheric chemistry; the role of clouds and aerosols in the climate system; atmospheric dynamics; atmospheric boundary layers; and regional modeling (simulations) of the atmosphere–ocean–land system.
Micrometeorological studies address problems of climate variation in complex terrain. An active research program models the dynamics of the Martian atmosphere. The on-site Oregon Climate Service provides information to meteorologists across the state.
